Deutsche Bank Gebäude (Banker's Trust) wird in NY abgerissen
>>NEW YORK (AP) _ The Deutsche Bank building, a 40-story office tower damaged in the attack on the World Trade Center, is expected to be demolished beginning next month, according to a newspaper report.
The skyscraper, which sits just south of ground zero, has been declared beyond salvage, The New York Times reported Friday, citing people involved in negotiating the building's future.
Deutsche Bank had been in talks with its insurers to determine whether it would be cheaper to renovate or raze the tower, which was once valued at $170 million.
Last week, the bank reached a preliminary settlement with the lead insurer, the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, which would allow the building to be taken down, the Times said.
Roni Pragasam, a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bank, and Mark Schussel, a spokesman for Chubb, both declined to comment.
"We continue to work toward a final decision on the fate of the building," Pragasam told the Times.
Debris from the trade center left a 24-story gash in the building's facade, and while the building was deemed structurally sound, it became infested with mold caused by moisture from fire sprinklers.
Though it has since been cleaned, dismantling the structure is expected to cost more than $100 million because it must be encased in an airtight tarp to contain contaminants, the Times said.
A $1.5 million mural "trumpeting a new symbol to rise at ground zero," the 1,776-foot spire designed by Daniel Libeskind, will be installed on the tarp at the directive of Gov. George Pataki.
The fate of the property after the building is demolished is uncertain, the Times said.<<
